At IST, the MIST (Media at the International School of Tianjin) team plays a vital role in the daily life of the school community by broadcasting important announcements and information to the secondary homerooms at the beginning of each school day on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. This structured approach to communication ensures that all students are informed and engaged with school activities and events.
The team responsible for each broadcast is comprised of several key roles that work in unison to create a smooth and effective transmission. This team includes two anchors who are tasked with delivering the news and announcements with clarity and enthusiasm. In addition to the anchors, there is a script manager whose job is to assist the anchors to practice their lines, by operating the teleprompter according to the speech rate of the anchors.
This individual also ensures that all necessary information is accurate, relevant, and presented in a logical order, which is crucial for maintaining the flow of the broadcast. Furthermore, an engineer is responsible for the technical aspects of the transmission, including sound quality, video feeds, and any multimedia elements that may be included. This role is essential for ensuring that the broadcast runs smoothly without any technical glitches that could disrupt the flow of information.
Moreover, a student supervisor oversees the entire process, providing guidance and support to the team members and ensuring that everyone is fulfilling their roles effectively. This supervisory position is key in fostering a collaborative environment where team members can communicate openly and work together to create a polished final product. In practice, it is common to see additional students present during the broadcasts, as many positions are shadowed by trainees who are eager to learn the intricacies of each role. This creates an atmosphere of mentorship and skill development, as experienced team members take the time to instruct and guide those who are new to the process.
Each role within the MIST team carries with it the added responsibility of training other students, which is an integral part of the program. This not only helps in building a strong foundation of skills among the students but also ensures that the MIST team remains robust and well-prepared for future broadcasts. By fostering an environment where students can learn from one another, the program cultivates leadership skills and encourages a sense of community within the school. Ultimately, the MIST broadcasts serve not only as a source of information but also as a platform for student engagement, teamwork, and personal growth.
The broadcast begins at exactly 0812 each morning and follows a consistent format, with announcements made by the anchors and three student-created videos of between 0:45 and 1:30 introduced also. The broadcast concludes after 7 to 8 minutes. Each week’s broadcasts requires two meetings the week before: a student leadership meeting on Wednesday and a members’ meeting on Thursday. The leadership meeting is dedicated to reflecting on the previous week’s activities, anticipating issues that may be arising in the short and medium term, and planning for longer term actions as required (for example, transitioning from one year’s group of leaders to the next, or other strategic decisions about broader MIST activities). It is also an opportunity for leaders to reflect on the concepts and values that underpin the successful management of their organization. The members’ meeting on Thursday brings together the entire organisation (roughly 40 students) to make announcements, provide guidance and encouragement, and to plan the next week’s video creation schedule. Students from grades 6 to 12 are encouraged to join MIST and contribute according to their abilities and interests.
